Moon of the 15th

For Chamber Ensemble

Commissioned by Kamran Ali and Scott Webel on behalf of the University of Texas at Austin South Asia Institute in conjunction with Pakistan’s National Academy of Performing Arts and the US State Department

Moon of the 15th is a true work of fusion. As a Visiting Scholar at University of Texas at Austin I had to bring together a group of musicians to form a band which would give live performances at the end of the exchange program in America and Pakistan. Always inspired by the beautiful Raag Charukeshi I chose to compose the melody in as my friend Muhammad Waqas played an interesting rhythmic pattern in 15 beats on tabla.

I had a chance to hear the work of a few wonderful composers who were graduates at UT Austin and one of them was Franklin Piland. I then asked Franklin to arrange this piece for the ensemble to which he happily agreed and the ensemble enjoys every time playing it since everyone gets to play a solo on evolving ostinati that grow out of the drone and creates a sense of forward motion and intensity steadily evolving from a more ‘classical chamber’ sound to a jazz/raga/rock based fusion sound.

Tum

I wrote Tum in 2008, the song is very close to my heart and was originally in waltz, I then arranged it in reggae for the band. It also evolved with time and I added a whole new section in between where the rhythm pattern changes. Each member of Sangat ensemble contributed their own taste and it turned out to be more appealing and still in evolution, studio recording coming out soon.
